World-rated featherweight Puppy Garcia was one of Cuba's most popular fighters ever, selling out large arenas every time he laced on a glove.

His career was interrupted, just as promoter Chris Dundee was setting up a title bout against Hogan (Kid) Bassey, by an eight-year political prison stint in a Cuban concentration camp for being a member of the anti-Castro resistance movement.

Garcia was exiled to the United States in 1980, was a municipal employee for the city of Sweetwater, Florida, and died of a stroke on October 23, 2005.
