An article in the Atlantic City Press (Atlantic City, NJ) (1-4-1949, p. 11) reported that Cooney's family moved from Philadelphia to Atlantic City in 1903 and that he boxed in the United States Navy winning "the Atlantic Fleet championship, the Atlantic and Pacific titles, the Panama Canal Zone crown, and the All-Navies championship at Rio de Janiero, where he defeated Freddy Cartledge, champion of the English Navy". According to the article, Cooney left the Navy in 1923 and "fought several months on the West Coast, then returned home".
