Matt Ross was a hard punching light-heavyweight with plenty of guts and ring savvy. A natural light-heavyweight, he took on heavyweights to get work. His biggest victories were over former light-heavyweight contender Eddie Owens, Otis Gordon, and Eddie Phillips. He also faced former WBA light-heavyweight champion Mike Rossman just before Rossman's title winning victory over Victor Galindez. The Rossman fight was only Ross's 15th professional fight, while the experienced Rossman was engaging in his 41st professional fight. The loss to Rossman ruined Ross's once promising career and he only won two of his final ten fights against much bigger opponents.
