Manny Sobral competed as a welterweight at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games for Canada. He lost a 4-1 decision to Joni Nyman of Finland. As a professional, Manny Sobral went on to capture the IBO Junior Middleweight World Championship. Sobral retired form boxing in 2002 and remained actively involved in the sport by co-founding, and coaching at the North Burnaby Boxing Club.

Away from the boxing gym, Sobral is a Vancouver School Board high school teacher and mentors youth at risk at the East End Boys Club.
