Billy Carroll 1915-1994

Billy Carroll was the professional name used by Hedley Cobb [[1]]

Hedley Cobb was born in Macksville in 1915. Hedley was one of five brothers all of whom shared a passion for Boxing.

Passion alone will not pay a mans bills so Hedley cut sugar cane, chopped wood and worked the wharves of Newcastle.

Hedley (or Big Bill) as he was known, boxed in Pubs, Stadiums and the tents of Jimmy Sharman. He also fought 10 sanctioned fights in Newcastle and Sydney between 1936 to 1940.

He married Edna Sheard and named his only son Bill.

He worked on the wharves of Newcastle Harbour until he retired in the 1970's and passed away in 1994.

Hedley Cobb is survived by 4 Grandchildren, 9 Great Grandchildren and 2 Great Great Grandchildren.
