Per the March 4, 1922 BREMERTON EVENING SEARCHLIGHT newspaper, Ritchie had been a Seattle-area middleweight boxer circa 1917. The paper reported that he had just been awarded $1,232 in back compensation by the United States Veterans' Bureau because of disabilities he sustained during World War I war service. He was to begin getting $135 per month. He was training to be a hotel manager.
