From the Jan. 22, 1937 TACOMA NEWS TRIBUNE: McGowan (Isom Lamb) was born in Texas, the 13th child in his family. His father--Dr. Jesse J. Lamb, who served the Confederacy in the Civil War--died when Isom was 7 months old. At the outbreak of WWI, Isom served overseas with a machine gun company. He was mustered out as a sergeant. He then entered Columbia University in New York City, graduating in 1924. He passed the state bar examination after studying law in the office of Judge Aldrich in Tucumcari, New Mexico. Isom then returned to NYC where he boxed professional for three years as "Billy McGowen." In 1929 he came out to the West Coast of the United States. In 1933 he married Miss Miriam Lowe, a member of a prominent Tarown, Utah, family. He then joined the Townsend political party in Los Angeles. Then he moved in the summer of 1936 to Chelan County in Washington state, where he became the county manager.
