Ray Routledge was born in Southampton, England on 2nd March 1931. As a youngster he showed promise in the amateur boxing ring, becoming Southern Area Welter Weight Champion. He turned professional under the manager Vince Hawkins. His short professional career started in 1950 with a win over Bruce McAlpine. His last fight was in July 1952 when he lost to Bryn Jones at Southsea, Hampshire. His record was 11 fights, 4 wins (1 KO), 5 defeats and 2 draws.

After retiring from the ring Routledge worked for many years at as an electrical engineer at the Ford Motor Company in Southampton. He retired in 1986 to look after his ailing wife who died in 1991. Routledge still lives in Southampton and is involved in local football.
