Vince Hawkins was from Eastleigh, Hampshire, where he was employed in the locomotive works. After his boxing career he became a prison officer at Winchester prison, where he worked until 1980. He died after suffering from Alzheimer's Disease; his funeral service took place on 8th December 2008.
