Johnson started boxing when he was 8 years old. His last amateur fight was last December of 2003. He said he had over 70 fights and was the Southeastern champion three times, along with Mid-South Golden Gloves champion and Gulf Coast States champion. He said he also won the Missouri Black Expo championship
