Born in Boston's West End, Kaplan lived in Brooklyn's Brownsville for some years. Much of his primary boxing education came in the mid 1930s at Frolky's Gym, Livona Ave and Van Sicien St, where one of his friends was Al (Bummy) Davis. Defeated Fritzie Zivic, Lew Jenkins and Freddy Cochrane-all World Champions and defeated numerous lightweight and welterweight contenders but never given a shot at the welterweight title. New England Welterweight Champion from 1940 until he retired in 1942.
