As a amateur Green was a sectional winner in 1976 at 160 lbs. losing in the finals to future World Champion Lee Roy Murphy.
In 1977 the weight classes changed and Green won went down to 156 lbs. where in a Open division title bout defeated Kevin Strong and representing Chicago he won the Intercity Golden Gloves' championship at 156 lb. vs. Johnny Hayes.
Green returned in 1978 winning a sectional title and lost in the 156 pound finals to Brian Matthews.
