Marion Bermudez was born in New York City and holds a degree in electronics from the University of Southern Arizona. In 1977 she won her third consecutive Women's World Championship of Self Defense at Madison Square Garden. AS a national karate champion she fought for as much as $2,000 and appeared on ABC’s Wide World of Sports. She stated, “I got into boxing because my karate coach wanted me to learn to take a punch. I’ve been hit as hard as I’ve been hit in boxing. I like boxing. In karate before, you don’t know if you scored a point or not. Boxing is very honest. You either knock them out, our you don’t…Boxing is down to earth.” She had two amateur bouts with men in the Phoenix Golden Gloves in 1974. She defeated one of the men, Edwardo Parras, by a third-round split decision in the 125-pound novice division. She became the first female boxer to score a victory in a nationally sanctioned tournament in the United States.
