Benzinger was the grandfather of Major League baseball player Todd Benzinger. His son Joe Jr., was a running back at the University of Cincinnati in the early 1950s. Benzinger, was reportedly a semi-pro baseball player himself, and later served in the US Navy, in the South Pacific during World War II.
