John Sawchyn was known as "The Bayview Tiger". and boxed in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada where he lived, worked, and raised a family of ten children. He built a gymnasiam in his backyard and trained some of his children there. John's sons, Philip and Norman, would often box prior to matches under the names Thunder and Lightning respectively.
