Career Review

Ray "Sonny" Schlamp was a highly touted prospect in the early 1960s. He was also known as Ray "Dutch" Schlamp. He turned professional at 16 and his career ended mysteriously at age 21. Schlamp was noted for his knockout punch, but his less then impressive competition.

In his first year as a professional, Schlamp was featured in the July 1960 Ring Magazine in an article about promising prospects entitled, "They Hope For Success."

In 1962, former heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey became interested in Schlamp's boxing career.

Schlamp never lost a fight as a professional or an amateur. As an amateur lightweight, he won the Metropolitan AAU Lightweight Championship in New York in 1959. Schlamp was undefeated as an amateur boxer with a record of 16-0-0, 16 knockouts.

Schlamp fought in the Miami-Dade County, Florida area, but his boxrec record fails to list these fights. Schlamp fought on a Dick Lee promotion at the Little River Auditorium on at least one card.

Schlamp was 17-0-0, 17 knockouts as a professional (boxrec lists him as 15-0-0, 15 knockouts) when, for unknown reasons, he stopped fighting. Schlamp retired with a combined fight record of 33-0-0, 33 knockouts.

Total record of opposition at time of meeting, 3 - 7 - 2
