As a Simon Pure, Tony Ferry (of Portuguese-American heritage) fought 75 battles and lost only four bouts. He was the All-American Champion and All-Eastern heavyweight champion in 1938. He beat, among others, Johnny Shkor of Baltimore. He kayoed Charley Ketchuck of New York in his last amateur fight.
When he turned pro in 1940, he was handled by Frank Hennessey and Manny Meduros.
