On a page edited by W. F. Corbett and titled, "The World's Boxing News and Comment," in the December 18, 1918 edition of the Referee (Sydney, NSW), there was a little item with the headline, "Tommy Brownlee Dead." The content of the item was as follows: "I was very sorry indeed to learn, last Saturday night, that that game and clever young middleweight, Tommy Brownlee, was buried on Friday morning. He died of enteric fever. Tommy put up some great and exciting contests at the Stadium. He could always be depended upon to acquit himself well if matched within reason."
