At an early age moved to Lawton, N.D., where his father was the county sheriff. Fire destroyed the town's school, and by time it was rebuilt, Iago had started working as a railroad telegrapher. He was still working for the railroad when he moved to the Twin Cities to box in the early 1920s. Minnesota and Wisconsin had a combined amateur boxing championship, and Iago won the lightweight division three years. He had more than 40 fights, including one on a card that included Gene Tunney.
In his later years, he was a member of the Four Redheads, a popular swing band.
