Italian imigrants Pasquale Luigi D'Andrea and Catherine Luciano moved to upper east side Manhattan,New York in a section called Mulberry Bend hence the name "The Mulberry Bend Kid".Mulberry Bend was populated with Italian immigrants and was one of the roughest area in the U.S. or the world at the time with all that poverty, infestation with disease, and the main thing was it was gang infested. Pasquale boxed in Italy and the U.S. under the name Paddy Reade he had 26 carrer wins and his brother who boxed under the name Midget Reade ran out of opponents in the featherweight division. Pasquale and Catherine soon gave birth to Vincent John D'Andrea "The Mulberry Bend Kid." Vinnie would soon make good in the ring winning the Golden Gloves in Catskill, New York. He was a Jamaica Arena amateur star holding an amateur record of 23 wins 2 defeats and 16 wins by KO. When he was 19 years old he went pro and won his first 10 fights and then lost to Jimmy Dillon which seemed to be a fluke when he fought him a month later and KO'd him in 2 rounds. He was a smart fighter, very fast and had a mean left hook. In 1949 D'Andrea represented New York for the Intercity Golden Gloves' championship at welterweight.
