Herman Gordon was born in Milford, Mass., and moved to Nashua, New Hampshire, with his family in the 1920s. He then moved to Lowell, Mass., where he lived until the early 1970s. He then moved to Coca Raton, FL., and in the 1990s, back to Nashua, NH. He boxed as a youth under the name Kid Murphy.

In 1929, Herman Gordon, driven by his entrepreneurial spirit, co-founded Gordon Brothers Markets with his brother Benjamin on Aiken and Bridge Streets in Lowell, Mass. His business acumen led him to acquire Alexander’s Market on Merrimack Street in Lowell in 1946, which he transformed into the 13-store Alexander Supermarket chain. This chain operated in nine communities in northeastern Massachusetts and New Hampshire, a testament to his success. In 1990, he made a strategic decision to sell the chain to Hannaford Brothers.
