I am Victor Amato's nephew. My mother is his twin sister. I was only 9 years old when he died in 1959 but I have many fond memories of him. He was known in the family as a free spirit, with a charismatic and engaging personality, but also as a loving husband, father, son and brother. His premature death from cancer at the young age of 37 (leaving behind a wife and 3 young sons) have elevated him to legendary status over the years.

The almost 4 year gap in career was caused by his tour in the Army. He served in the Army infantry and I believe he saw action.

The stories about his fighting days have been told many times. A few years ago, at a family funeral, I met an in-law who told me he was at Herbie Kronowitz fight in 1947. How I wish I was there to have seen that! If my uncle had won he would have been in line for more important bouts. Unfortunately he lost a decision.

These are some memories of my uncle, who I still miss after 48 years even though I hardly knew him.
