Gunnis was a boxing promoter from 1916, until his death from a heart attack in 1936. Shortly after beginning his promotional career, Gunnis joined forces with Herman Taylor in a promotional partnership. The two eventually became among Philadelphia's top boxing promoters, most notably working with Tex Rickard in the promotion of the first Jack Dempsey - Gene Tunney match.
