Chester Ellis was a member of the Iroquois Tribe. He left his reservation in Red House, New York, in 1933 to attend the Haskell Institute, graduating in 1937. He won the 118-pound championship at the 1939 Chicago Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions by decision over Earl Reid of Benton Harbor MI, and then later representing Chicago, he was on the short end of a decision, for the Intercity Golden Gloves' championship with Bill Speary being awarded the verdict. On May 12, 1939 in Chicago representing the United States vs. Europe he was awarded the verdict vs. Guido Nardecchia of Italy at bantamweight.
