According to the March 18, 1939 edition of the Sydney Morning Herald on the Trove website, Stanley James "Mickey" Leonard, 24-year-old boxer from Darlinghurst, was wounded with a shot to the groin while allegedly attempting to enter a café on early Wednesday (March 15, 1939) in Darlinghurst and died in Sydney Hospital on Thursday (March 16, 1939).
According to a column titled "The Boxing Game As It Strikes Me" and written by W. J. Ahearn in the March 23, 1939 edition of the Referee (Sydney, NSW) on the Trove website, Mickey Leonard, a former Queensland lightweight, had died in the Sydney Hospital after being shot outside a café. Also according to Ahearn, Mickey Leonard and his brother, Jerry, a welterweight, had fought in New South Wales with a varying degree of success.
