- According to the May 6, 1950 Tacoma News Tribune, his real name was Johnny Quarrels. "He boxed here two or three times. Then a strange thing happened. He was observed in a local freight yard and was saved from a suicide attempt as he seemingly had lost his mind. As he was being taken to the police station, he bolted and was shot near the spine. He was in the hospital a long time, later was committed to Steilacoom [Western State Mental Hospital]. Released, he next turned up in Cleveland and now is boxing in northeast states. He has won the New England welter title and has defeated several pretty good fighters."
