According to a TACOMA NEWS-TRIBUNE newspaper edition of the day, on Sept. 1, 1929, Dolby, on his 25th birthday, saved a woman from drowning.

Upon seeing someone apparently drowning below him, near his home of the time at Redondo Beach, California, Dolby dove fully-dressed from a 60-foot cliff into the sea below. He thus saved Miss Audrey Harper of Los Angeles, who had become exhausted trying to escape a rip tide, from certain death.
