August 9, 1936 Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reported Church who had been in Berlin with the US Olympic Boxing team was sent home with Howell King. Church said he was sent home after stealing a camera from a store. The camera was returned and Church thought nothing would happen but then he and King were dismissed from the team.
