- Hernandez was the welterweight champion at the 1960 Chicago Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions, he won the final vs. Mark Burds of Denver, CO. He had previously, in 1959, represented New York at the Intercity Golden Gloves Tournament at welterweight with the verdict being awarded Ottie Adkins. Pete Toro representing Chicago edged out a decision over Hernandez for the Intercity Golden Gloves' championship at welterweight in 1960.
- Hernandez fought four world champions which included Luis Manuel Rodriguez, Sugar Ray Robinson, Nino Benvenuti and Denny Moyer going the distance with all and winning the decision from Robinson.
- Hernandez later worked as a referee in Nevada, and as a bartender in Las Vegas
