Merritt was employed by the Southeastern Ice Company of Lake Worth, Florida, which appears to be the likely origins of his name. Merritt served as a technician in the medical department of the 101st Infantry during World War II. He was awarded a Bronze Star for assisting six wounded men in an area under gunfire, although his company had moved to a safer position in the vicinity of Oberzerf, Germany on March 11, 1945. Merritt rescued several persons from a burning building.
