"George (Sugar) Costner scored the fistic upset of the year tonight by thrashing lightweight champion Ike Williams to gain a unanimous 10-round decision before a crowd at Shibe Park in their non-title scrap. The lanky Costner hit Williams with everything but the ringposts, but was unable to floor the plucky 135-pound king. Williams never had a chance after the hard-punching Costner clipped him with a vicious left hook in the 3rd round. But like the champion he is, Williams rallied briefly in the 7th round and looked for a minute as if he would do the impossible. He rocked George with a left hook - but he didn't have the stamina to follow up his opening and Costner regained the offensive." -Associated Press
- Unfortunately, this was Costner's last bout. After receiving the diagnosis that he had a detached retina in his left eye - an injury he eventually went blind from - he was retired by the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission on November 21st of 1950.
