Ike Williams 135 lbs lost to Jimmy Carter 133 lbs by TKO in round 14 of 15

  • Date: 1951-05-25
  • Location: Madison Square Garden, New York, New York, USA
  • Referee: Petey Scalzo

"Jimmy Carter held the world lightweight championship today and defiantly declared that he is no cheese champ. A comparative stranger even in his own hometown, Carter knocked the crown off Ike Williams' groggy head last night when he stopped the weight-weakened defending champion in 2:49 of the 14th round of a 15 rounder in MSG. The flat-nosed ex-GI knocked down scowling Ike four times and was leading on the scorecards of all three officials when referee Petey Scalzo stopped the bout as Williams staggered to his feet after taking a six-count." -Associated Press

  • The NBA, angered at Ike Williams for failure to defend his title often enough, stated that Carter, who was rated No. 12 in their latest rankings, was not considered a proper opponent and his recognition as champion was tenuous. However, they further indicated that Carter would carry recognition provided he agreed to meet certain challengers within a definite period.
