"John L. Davis from Oakland, Calif., pursued lightweight champion Ike Williams of Trenton, N.J., for 10 rounds Monday night but dropped a split decision in an overweight match. The crowd, estimated at 4,200, who paid $15,000 to see Williams fight were all for Davis when the champ climbed on his bicycle in the opening round and stayed there most of the distance. Davis fought out of a crouch, boring in and giving Williams only the top of his head as a bobbing target. The champion outboxed Davis, keeping himself out of danger with his educated left jab. The crowd was on its feet at the finish as Davis swarmed all over the retreating Williams and rocked him with straight lefts and rights. There were no knockdowns." -Associated Press
