In a bout of survival on the undercard of an eight bout card at BB King Blues Club & Grill in New York City presented by Lou DiBella Entertainment,
Isiah Thomas of Detroit, Michigan, went to 8-0, 4 kayos, with a six round unanimous decision over tough light heavyweight Tony 'The Italian Nightmare" DiPietronio. Thomas, oho won every round, dropped DiPietronio with a straight left in round one, and again with a leaping right hook in round one, and it looked all over. DiPietronio went down a third time, ruled a slip by referee Gary Rosato. DiPietronio had tried to go on the offensive at the start and could not trade with a bigger, taller, stronger opponent. He tried it anyway to win, and almost got blown out. However, from that point on, DiPietronio changed gears, and fought more of a defensive style bout more to survive rather than try to aggressively win the bout. In round two, Thomas jabbed technically with his right to score points rather than swing away and try to end it, which he appeared able to do. Interesting strategy, as DiPietronio was forced to spend the rest of the bout cautiously trying to somehow get inside but could not. In round three, Thomas continued jabbing with his straight right and scored, with DiPietronio trying to counterpunch. Thomas had superior height, reach and speed, a good prospect with good side to side footwork. Thomas tied up DiPietronio all night whenever he tried to come inside. In the fourth, DiPietronio moved up and down, trying to confuse Thomas, but still could not get inside and reach him. DiPietronio continued to get tangled up with Thomas trying to come in. In the fifth, Thomas slipped DiPietronio's best punches and scored with the right with his front foot on the inside. Thomas went down, ruled a slip. The fifth and the sixth rounds featured some wrestling as DiPietronio got more desperate. A short counter right from Thomas sent a careless DiPietronio, who tried again to open up, using his left, down for the third time for a count of three or four in the sixth. Tony, who lived up to his nickname 'tough', was exactly that, not landing anything after the first round. However, Tough Tony took an assortment of punishing blows to go the distance. This bout could have been stopped a few rounds earlier, but DiPietronio was at least trying (though not landing) so referee Harvey Dock let it go the distance and gave DiPietronio every chance. Neither fighter was hurt. Thomas appeared to opt for a good workout after the first round and was careful not to punch himself out. Thomas weighed in at 177, so the bout went off at cruiserweight, Trialhorse DiPietronio, winner of one of his last nine bouts, was at 175.
