"World lightweight champ Ismael Laguna of Panama kept his crown Saturday night against challenger Ishimatsu Suzuki of Japan with a TKO at 2:45 of the 13th round. Laguna opened a cut in the Japanese fighter's nose in the 3rd round and from then on Suzuki bled from that until the referee stopped the bout. There were no knockdowns and neither of the fighters was staggered by a blow." -United Press International
- Unofficial scorecards: The AP and Ring Magazine (UPI did not submit a card) both scored the bout 119-112 for Laguna through 12 completed rounds.
- Cain Young, Laguna's manager, announced after this bout that Laguna would be defending his title against Ken Buchanan next, with place and date not yet decided.
- Laguna also had offers on the table to defend against Pedro Carrasco, Flash Elorde and even a Japanese offer of a rematch with Suzuki.
- On June 8th, two days after this bout, the WBC backed the California Athletic Commission to strip Laguna of his world title unless he honors the contract with the Olympic Boxing Club, which he signed when he won the world title, to defend his title against a challenger of their choosing. The WBC, at this time, ordered him to defend against the winner of the upcoming Mando Ramos v Sugar Ramos 10-rounder. And if he failed to do so, the winner of that bout would meet Pedro Carrasco of Spain for WBC recognition.
