Israel Acosta is a former amateur boxer, who has coached hundreds of amateur boxers for over two decades. Dozens of his fighters have competed on the national level. As a boxer Acosta won several local and regional tournaments in the lower weight classes, including the 1977 National AAU Flyweight championship and 1984 National Golden Gloves Light flyweight title. Israel also coaches some professional boxers.
