Cocoa Kid 143 lbs lost to Izzy Jannazzo 147 lbs by SD in round 15 of 15

  • Date: 1940-10-14
  • Location: Carlin's Park, Baltimore, Maryland, USA
  • Referee: Jack Dempsey

"Izzy Jannazzo of NY City held the welterweight title of the state of Maryland today but was recognized only as a leading contender by the NYSAC and the NBA. Jannazzo won recognition of the Maryland Board last night by pounding out a 15 round decision over the Cocoa Kid of Puerto Rico. Jannazzo gained the verdict when Jack Dempsey, refereeing the bout, and judge Ed Brockman cast their votes in his favor. Charley Baum, the second judge, voted for the Cocoa Kid. Several newspapermen agreed with Baum. There were no knockdowns before the crowd of 3,000. The New Yorker won by using a sharp left jab and two sturdy legs that kept him out of range of the Puerto Rican's heavier attack. Cocoa forced the fight but had to keep running which kept him off-balance most of the time." -United Press

  • The Maryland Commission withdrew recognition of Henry Armstrong after negotiations collapsed for Armstrong to fight in Baltimore. Armstrong's manager Eddie Mead had stated that his boy could fight for no one but Mike Jacobs of MSG.
  • Jannozzo defended his title once before it fell into disuse.
