Dennis Andries overcame attacks from the media and his opponent J.B. Williamson, to register the upset 12-round split decision win and claim the WBC Light Heavyweight Title.

Andries launched an all-out attack from the opening bell, charging at Williamson and knocking the champion out of his stride.

Williamson recovered from a slight cut over his left eye during the sixth round to stem the tide a bit. But his title was lost as Andries launched one final burst of sustained aggression in the late rounds.

Only the American judge, Tony Castellano, scored against Andries. British judge Harry Gibbs and Belgian Jean Deswert each scored in favor of the Englishman.

Notes

  • J.B. Williamson 22-1 (8 KOs) vs. Dennis Andries 26-6-2 (17 KOs)

  • Andries entered as the BBBofC British Light Heavyweight Champion.

Quotes

  • "People say I boxed wrong, but it was the only way I knew and it worked. I know I'm no Sugar Ray Leonard, but I just do what I've got to do." - Dennis Andries
  • Before the fight, Williamson said he was the matador fighting the bull and he predicted he would use the bull's hide as a rug.
