  • "Jack 'Kid' Berg retained his junior welterweight title by decisively defeating Goldie Hess of California in a 10-round championship bout at Chicago Stadium last night. Berg, a tireless windmill type of battler, found Hess an unexpectedly willing opponent and there was not a dull moment during their entire contest. Hess, a 5-1 underdog in the betting, was more than willing to trade punches with Berg and until he tired in the closing rounds gave the White Chapel Hebrew a great battle, frequently staggering Berg. Although he gave a good account of himself, Hess won only two rounds. The 4th and 8th with the 2nd even. Berg won all the rest. In the 10th, Hess was so arm weary he was unable to defend himself and staggered about the ring. Berg had a great chance for a knockout, but failed to slow down long enough to take a clean shot." -United Press
