Bout preview: [1]

"Dave Shade, California battler, punched his way to a draw last night at the Milwaukee Arena, giving Jack Britton, world's welterweight champion, the surprise of his life. The draw decision was popular. The old ring general had it all over the California youngster in the last rounds, but the earlier part of the fight was touch and go. Shade was a second away from the world's welterweight crown in the 4th round. He caught Britton flush on the jaw with a left smash and finished when Britton hit the floor with a thud. The champion took the count of nine, arose, and, dodging Shade's wild and anxious swings, hung on until his head cleared. It was this display of haymaking ability that earned Shade the draw decision, for the champion was never in danger from then on. The last two rounds were easily Britton's." -The Modesto Evening News
