California Heavyweight Gets Busy and Finishes Fireman in Short Order
CHICAGO, Feb. 15. — Fight fans here today are chanting a pugilistic requiem for Jim Flynn, the ancient pugilist fireman, but are predicting a bright future for Jack Dempsey, the heavyweight from Utah. Dempsey shoved Flynn into the discard at Fort Sheridan last night by knocking him out before two minutes of the first round had passed.
Flynn was helpless before Dempsey's attack. A smashing wallop to the body directly under his left arm started the veteran going, and a few seconds later Dempsey had driven him, dazed and helpless, through the ropes. With Flynn scrambling among the first row spectators, Tom Jones, who was in Flynn's comer, gave the referee the signal to call it off.
The Pueblo scrapper was not in condition, some critics even declaring he had applied rouge to his face to eradicate the marks of age.
Dempsey's victory wipes out the stain of a knockout Flynn scored on him a year ago. Flynn's defeat is believed to mark his passing from the ranks of formidable heavyweight scrappers.
