It was reported in the 1927-4-18 Warren (PA) Tribune that Jack Duffy, then 20, had had more than 100 fights of which he had won 95 percent. He had scored a recent win over Maxie Holub in Akron and had won the lightweight title of Greater Cincinnati when he stopped Midget Guery in the 9th round at Cincinnati.

Among the fighters he had met were Ad Wolgast, Charlie Lupica, Red McDonald, Tony Ross, Tommy Mitchell, Jake Gross, Chuck Feldman, Johnny Datto (against whom he sprained his ankle and was unable to continue), Frankie Bob, Joe Paglina, Jackie Dugan, Willie Ames, Al Corbett, Phil McGraw (against whom he dropped exhausted in the last round of a 12-rounder), Sammy Mandell, Pep O'Brien and Charlie O'Connell.

At the time of writing Duffy had two offers to fight in Madison Square Garden; one to meet Mike Ballerino, the other offer to meet Stanislaus Loayza.
