Jack McAuliffe beat Charles Bull McCarthy by PTS in round 4 of 4

  • Date: 1886-07-23
  • Location: Clark's Theatre, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
  • Young McAuliffe, who was just coming off a brilliant amateur career, had planned out a tour with manager Billy Madden in which he would meet all comers in four round bouts. In one of these bouts, he met rugged "Bull" McCarthy in Bull's hometown of Philadelphia. McCarthy's chums had gambled a decent amount of money on McCarthy and would do everything and anything possible to prevent the Bull from losing. In the first round McCarthy fought cautiously but in the second, the Bull, hence his name, rushed out with wild right and left handed swings. McCarthy was soon met with a left hook to the body and a right hand that put him out. The next notable event that took place was when a chair hit McAuliffe, knocking him over. It was actually a pleasant surprise that a chair hit McAuliffe instead of a life-threatening bullet of knife. The chair was thrown by McCarthy's father and the crowd cheered. Luckily for Madden and McAuliffe that they didn't have to deal with anything further as they survived in a dangerous environment under dangerous circumstances.
