Max Baer lost to Jack McCarthy by DQ in round 3 of 6
- Date: 1929-09-04
- Location: Arcadia Pavilion, Oakland, California, USA
- Referee: Billy Snailham
"The Max Baer and Jack McCarthy scrap was the real feature of the night. McCarthy draped on the ropes, didn't want to fight any more. Baer stepped aside and motioned him to come out. McCarthy refused the invitation. Thereupon Max grabbed him around the waist and threw him forcefully to the floor. McCarthy got the decision on a foul, Baer got the raspberry. There is no doubt that Baer lost his head, but McCarthy was somewhat provoking. He tried to lay down earlier in the fight but the bell forestalled him. If promoter Parente would only match up the pair for a four-round main event and line up some strong preliminaries he should pack the hall. Four rounds should be the limit, it wouldn't go any further." (Hayward Review)
