Jaime Garza 122 lbs beat Carmelo Negron 121 lbs by TKO at 2:30 in round 5 of 10

Super bantamweight Jaime Garza of Los Angeles, ranked No. 2 by the WBC, solidified his claim for a world title shot by stopping Carmello Negron of New York at 2:30 of the fifth round of a scheduled ten-round bout at Hacienda Hotel.

Garza, 122, reopened a deep gash on Negron's right eyelid late in the fifth round of the nationally televised fight. The cut prompted referee Richard Green to stop the bout on advice of the ring physician, Dr. Donald Romeo.

The 22-year-old Garza, still undefeated with a 35-0 record and 33 knockouts, first cut Negron, 121 1/4, around his eye in the third. The hard-hitting Garza has now won 18 straight fights by knockouts.

Garza, who at 5-foot-7 is five inches taller than Negron, scored heavily with left hooks to the head from the beginning. He jarred Negron, ranked No. 7 by the WBC, in the first and had him in trouble late in the fourth.

Negron, who tried to get inside and was an easy target for Garza, was battered in the fifth, getting cut over the left eye and developing a welt under his right eye.
