Jake Kilrain was born at Greenpoint, Long Island, New York, USA, February 9, 1859. He was of Irish parentage and his real name was John Joseph Killion. Having begun his muscular training in a Boston rolling mill, he first became known to the sporting public as a crack amateur oarsman. In 1883 he won the junior single scull championship of America, and soon afterward turned to new worlds to conquer.
