Jake LaMotta 170 lbs beat Dick Wagner 168 lbs by TKO at 2:40 in round 9 of 10

  • Date: 1950-02-03
  • Location: Olympia Stadium, Detroit, Michigan, USA
  • Referee: Clarence Rosen

"Middleweight champion Jake LaMotta, 170, came up last night with a two-fisted answer to those who said he was slipping as a fighter. The Bronx, N.Y. titleholder hung a 9th round TKO over Dick Wagner, 168, of Portland, Ore., in a bruising battle at Olympia Stadium. It was supposed to be a fairly easy go for Jake but the crowd saw the dead-game Wagner make a fight of it until 2:40 of the 9th round when referee Clarence Rosen stopped the massacre. Jake was held on even terms through the first four rounds but then began to move to the front. By the 7th he was hitting Wagner hard and often. LaMotta wound things up in the 9th. He hit Wagner with everything he had but could not floor the game Oregon boy. Wagner was reeling in a helpless condition when the fight was stopped." -Associated Press

  • LaMotta signed for this bout on January 16th to appease the NYSAC's Eddie Eagan, who had threatened to strip LaMotta of his title for failure to defend. Eagan agreed to the non-title match for the time being but insisted he sign for a summer defense by February 1st.
