  • Date: 1945-03-26
  • Location: Chicago Stadium, Chicago, Illinois, USA
  • Referee: Walter Brightmore

"The bubble that was George (Sugar) Costner was completely burst today. Jake LaMotta, NY middleweight, finished it off with a sensational knockout in the 6th round of a scheduled 10 rounder last night. LaMotta played it safe for more than five rounds. Then in the 6th, LaMotta stepped under a right swing, planted a hard left to the body and followed with a left, a right and left to the chin and Costner went down for nine. When he got up LaMotta threw a hard left hook and Costner fell on the back of his head. The count was only incidental and it was almost 15 minutes before his handlers took him from the ring to his dressing room." -Associated Press
