James "Jabbo" Kenner founded the Metropolitan Police Boys and Girls Clubs and is the namesake for a summer basketball in league in Washington D.C. A community leader for disadvantaged youths, Kenner worked for decades in athletic programs, with some estimates indicating he helped over 50,000 youngsters. In 1981, he received an Honorary Doctorate from Georgetown University.
Kenner was forced to retire from boxing in 1943 with tuberculosis. He died in 1983 of a liver ailment. [1]
