James E. (Doc) Payne was "said to be a wealthy young physician who gave up his practice" to become a prize fighter. He was a long-time traveling companion and sparring partner of Kid McCoy.
In 1905, Doc Payne was listed as the trainer for the Cleveland baseball team.
Doc Payne died by his own hand in Sept. 1910 when his estranged wife would not reconcile. He had gone to her home and shot himself in the head in front of her and her mother. [1]
